Wasting food is a huge problem that most first world countries face. Millions of calories of food are wasted on a yearly basis in the United States and this represents a net loss in resources and the economy. There are methods, however, to help persons to stop wasting food. Persons only need to be warned that this is a serious issue and that food is not something we should take for granted. Only then will people make a greater effort to stop wasting food.

Save money by wasting less food

In order to stop wasting food, we should purchase food in the right proportions for our families and/or ourselves and try to minimize having leftovers that merely go to waste. This requires a new attitude altogether that will embrace the fact that wasting less food actually means spending less money. Consequently, this change will work out for you positively. All you will be doing is not purchasing food you would not be eating any way and thus, saving the money you would have used on this food. This has other implications other than saving money. This means less use of resources in general such as water and energy.

There are several tips that may help you to stop wasting food. They are as follows:

1. Purchase correct portions of food.
2. Research and learn recipes for which leftover food can be used.
3. Store your food properly to avoid it getting spoiled and to stop wasting food.
4. Plan your meals in advance so that you will purchase only what you need.
5. Use a compost heap to avoid wasting vegetable peels and other scraps.
6. When you cannot finish your meal at a restaurant, request to have the remains placed in a container for you to take home.

If you adhere to this advice, you will see a difference in your expenses as you set out to stop wasting food.
